The Winter Garden

You may have heard of the Ursulines from Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Waver, a sister order near Mechelen. Several centuries ago, they decided to enrich the newly founded Belgium with solid education. As it was in those days, it was mainly the well-to-do who wanted to be educated. To make both domestic and foreign guests feel at home, the nuns made sure that no expense was spared here. The result? An exceptionally beautiful school that is still in use today. The enchanting 1900 Winter Garden with a colorful stained-glass dome was the calling card of the then girls' boarding school. The architect of the Winter Garden remains strangely unknown.
*The Winter Garden in temporarily closed and will reopen in September 2023.

Hondsbossen hiking trail

The Hondsbossen are what remains of the Waverwoud, once a wilderness. Because in some places the soil was infertile and difficult to cultivate, large parts of the forest were left intact. So you can still admire this beautiful natural landscape with its fascinating biodiversity. Moreover, the hiking trails of Sint-Katelijne-Waver are open all year round.

't Grom

't Grom is a museum built around the themes of vegetables, healthy food and horticultural heritage. The museum is located in the Midzeelhoeve; a renovated eighteenth-century protected farmhouse with barns and gardens that once belonged to Roosendael Abbey. The museum is a 'do-museum': students get to work under supervision and prepare a healthy meal. Experiential learning outside the classroom is said to raise awareness, teaches children and adults to work together and makes them experience that vegetables are delicious.
